saddest song in the world

13 angels standing guard 'round the side of your bed by a silver mt. zion (now known as thee silver mt. zion memorial orchestra and tra la la band).

over this veteren's day weekend, i was reading deerhunter's blog and downloading their posted songs and mixes. one of their older posts mentions the saddest lyrics/songs they've ever heard. '13 angels' is the song which immediately came to mind. it's very pretty, but utterly and absolutley sad. an old girldfriend of mine forbade me from playing this around her any more after she'd heard it just a couple of times.

i imagine slow motion aerial footage of war torn battlefields; bombed out buildings and piles of dead in mass graves. the s p a r e, slow, pitch shifted, distorted keyboard chords and lonely strings make me think of crying angels, trying to muffle their groans. there are no lyrics here. they would only get in the way. i would likely lose my shit if i were to listen to this while tripping. be careful kids.

this song is from the band's first album, He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner of Our Rooms... . buy this and other records from constellation records.

listen to something peppy after this and before starting your weekend. or, watch the wonderfully hilarious movie, the saddest music in the world.

I find some Mogwai to be particularly sad. Mogwai in the dark with a ton of beer.
